Sketches of my friends, often done at social gatherings.

Hanging out

Just drawings of friends on a Friday night.
Mostly been occupied trying out my new printer and getting the settings right for optimal prints...

Oh, and I turned commenting back on with a required "captcha".

Friday Baseball [Watching]

This week we have Adam and Libby watching baseball. The one of Adam isn't a very good likeness, but better than last time I tried. It didn't help that he wasn't as clean shaven as he usually is.

So glad my friends don't seem to mind being drawn... + New Business Card Design

I got to hang out with my friends both Friday and Saturday night this past week.

I also started working on a new business card design, now that the ones I had made in college are running out. I'm sticking with the same overall theme/design, but mostly re-doing the art and removing the border (the place I got them done at before couldn't for the life of them center my border, and I wish I'd hand cut them myself...).

Doug, now with more expression

Doug, I think, has been hoping for a portrait for a while. Last time I started drawing him, though, his lighting was terrible, and he suddenly stopped moving, keeping unnaturally rigid when he realized I was drawing him. While this can be helpful in certain situations, he looked too stony, and without life, so I gave up the drawing and told him not to attempt keeping still for my sake. So when I tried again on Friday, he ignored me.

Sometimes I appreciate the challenge of capturing people while they're being animated. Part of it is that I can pick an expression and angle without impeding the conversation in the room or moving to a different couch. The drawings end up more life-like, less stony. And sometimes I start two drawings at a time, one for different angles if they're looking back and forth a lot, or of different people so I can do whichever one is in the pose I need and swap when they move. No, it doesn't always work.

Sketchblog - Open!

I've been toying with starting a sketchblog for a while now, as a way to encourage me to draw on a regular basis. I started a fresh sketchbook in December, and also started attending my local Dr Sketchy's monthly life drawing sessions. I've got a few paintings to work on lined up, too. I'll use this blog to keep track of my progress by posting anything I've done that I feel worth sharing, and try to keep it as regular as possible.

Thanks a bunch to Steve, who did most of the work in setting up the software, and is still helping me work out the bugs (some pixel gaps in the template, and changes to the layout).

And here I'll start with Steven doing his homework, and Matt on the couch.
